Winner of the State Street Overcoming the Odds Award 2013: Mr Mok Kim-wing, MH

Though Mok Kim-wing lost his eyesight at the age of 13, he never lost hope. He believes that losing the ability to see does not mean losing vision, and losing the ability to hear does not mean losing the capacity to persevere.

Mok founded two Fearless Dragon teams composed of visually and hearing-impaired athletes in 2013. This was his first year to participate in Oxfam Trailwalker, and he had high hopes that the teams would be able to demonstrate their strength despite their physical limitations, and be a symbol to show the community that people with disabilities can integrate into society. The teams underwent intensive training consistently three times a week for eight months under the guidance of an experienced Trailwalker. Despite the various disabilities of Mok and his teammates, they remained strong and gradually developed a bond as well as the ability to complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses. In the end, Mok and his team were able to complete the trail in 32 hours 19 minutes together – a dream came true for them all!
